Hyeonchungsa is a shrine for General Lee Sunsin. It is situated at the foot of Banghwa mountain, Yeomchi-eup, Asan-si, 4 km away from Onyang Oncheon. General Lee was raised and lived here until he passed national examination to become a military officer.

108 years after he was killed in Noryang naval battle in 1598, the shrine was built to commemorate General Lee's feats in 1706 the 32nd year of King Sukjong's reign). King Sukjong named the shrine Hyeonchungsa in 1707.

In 1932 under the Japanese colonial rule, a committee was formed to preserve relics related to General Lee. The committee overhauled the shrine. From 1945 after the independence from Japan, a ceremony and festival were held to celebrate the birth of the general and commemorate his military exploit in April 28 every year.

In 1966, Hyeonchungsa became a sanctuary, and was repaired and improved to commemorate General Lee's loyalty to the nation, righteousness, and feats. Landscape architecture work was conducted in 1974 and it maintained that appearance until today. In addition, the government proclaimed the shrine as historical site No. 155 and his grave in Ara mountain, Asan city as historical site No.112. The main hall contains a portrait of General Lee. The relics center holds Sipgyeongdo displaying the whole life of the general, his diary written during wars (National treasure No. 76), and his sword (Treasure No. 326). His boyhood house, artery field, and monument are located within Hyeonchungsa.
